American Folk Art Museum

FAMILY WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES On Sundays, the museum presents hands-on art workshops, gallery experiences and performances for families with children ages 5-12. Workshops include The Street Where You Live (Jan 27), which lets kids make a collage of their neighborhood-either as it is or as they would like it to be; in Hearts and Hands (Feb 10) visitors weave together paper hearts and hands for Valentine's Day, and an exhibition of decorated boxes (Feb 24) offers inspiration for kids and parents to decorate their own boxes to take home. Performances on the first Sunday of every month include interactive storytelling, music and puppets.

American Numismatic Society

DRACHMAS, DOUBLOONS AND DOLLARS: THE HISTORY OF MONEY This exhibition, held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (33 Liberty Street between Nassau and William Streets) highlights the significance of money as political propaganda, artwork, and a reflection of social climate and economy. Items on display range in date from a 7th-century-B.C. Lydian electrum coin to recent paper money such as a Romanian 2000-lei note commemorating the total solar eclipse on August 11, 1999. Visitors will also see varied and often strange images depicted on coins and bills as well as unusual examples of money, including shell money from Thailand and Native American wampum. The exhibition will include a short film and a replica of an early-19th-century money with a period coin screw press.

ONE PLANET UNDER A GROOVE This is the first exhibition to explore the transnational impact of hip hop culture on contemporary art. The exhibition displays the work of 30 visual artists based in the United States, Europe, and Japan and features more than 60 works, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs, installations and videos, created in the past two decades by artists influenced by hip-hop music and culture (through May 26). The museum offers several public and interpretive programs in conjunction with this exhibition. Bounce is a series of monthly parties that blend DJ and club culture, visual and media art and urban lifestyle. The Word features spoken word performances by emerging and established spoken word artists, and On Point is an ongoing series of discussions on contemporary art and culture in which One Planet artists join curators.

In one of the Bronx Zoo's many spring offerings for families, adventurous kids and parents travel the Zoo on a unique scientific adventure as they use binoculars to search for clues along a rainforest trail and gain an understanding of science as performed by professionals in the wilds of Africa (Apr 13). Picture This! Brooklyn on the Move (Grades 2-6) teaches about the ferries and horse-cars that were the beginnings of mass transit; Picture This! Brooklyn at Work (Grades 2-6) lets kids imagine going to work on the docks in 1890 or in a pencil factory in 1940. Students in the In Pursuit of Freedom Workshop (Grades 5-12) develop research and critical thinking skills as they investigate the roles of Brooklynites in the anti-slavery movement, using photographs, prints and newspaper articles.

Two scenarios are presented: in Shall I Pass?, kids assume the roles of immigrants, inspectors, translators and doctors as immigration inspectors assess the acceptability of newcomers to the United States, while All Aboard/Left Behind presents the voices of both immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and those who were detained.
TREASURES FROM HOME The exhibit of items brought from immigrants' countries of origin is enhanced by an in-class activity where students imagine what they might bring with them if they were moving to another country with only one suitcase.

SHORE TO SHORE A curriculum-based program uses pre- and post-visit activities to introduce students to conditions during the peak years of immigration. Students use hands-on activities to develop an understanding of the immigration experience between 1892-1924. Kids decide what to bring on their journey, proceed through medical and legal checkpoints, visit the immigrant sleeping quarters, and participate in a re-enactment of a 1910 immigration hearing. The program concludes with a class exercise on the immigrant's pursuit of U.S. citizenship.

SHARK! March 3, kids ages 8-11 get a behind-the-scenes view of the Aquarium's sharks. In the classroom after meeting these creatures, children examine shark teeth and skin up-close, then make crafts including a shark teeth necklace. SHARK-A-RAMA Families explore the world of the shark through songs, art activities, talks and a visit to the Aquarium's collection on March 9.

A WORLD OF CHOCOLATE Visitors to the Everett Children's Adventure Garden learn where chocolate comes from and make hot chocolate like the ancient Mayas did (Jan 19-Mar 10). Kids crush their own cacao seeds, then make their own recipe for ancient hot chocolate by adding different spices and flavorings.

New-York Historical Society

HISTORY RESPONDS The History Responds project includes a series of three exhibitions at the New-York Historical Society. The first exhibition (through Feb 25), New York September 11 by Magnum Photographers, is a collection of photographs taken of the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. The second exhibition (Feb 5-May 26), WTC: Monument, was first conceived by the Skyscraper Museum months prior to Sept 11. This exhibition was to tell the story of the creation of the Twin Towers and now will include the tragedy of its destruction. The third exhibition (March 12-June 9), Missing: The Streetscape of a City in Mourning, is a collaboration with City Lore: The New York Center for Urban Folk Culture. This exhibition is created from City Lore's collection of photographs, video recordings, spontaneous shrines and poems responding to the attacks the weeks after Sept 11. This exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public programs.

MILES OF TILES The Transit Museum tells the story of New York City's legendary public transportation system and the role it plays in the growth and history of the metropolis. The Miles of Tiles exhibition teaches students the history of ornamentation in New York's subways. Then students design and build their own mosaics to take home (Jan-June). Pan Asian Repertory Theatre

Specializing in new works in Asian-American theater, the repertory has programming for children available for both families and school groups in addition to its regular season of performances.
FORBIDDEN CITY BLUES A blind African-American blues musician tells the story of Raymond, a young Asian-American, and his Caucasian girlfriend, who visit China to rediscover Raymond's cultural roots in a new comedy by Alexander Woo. This performance runs from March 19 through April 10 at the West End Theater at 263 West 86th Street.

The Shadow Box Theatre offers special performances for school groups. Puppets, music and live actors join forces in performances including The African Drum (Jan 14-Feb 28), Hand in Hand, formerly The Earth and Me (Mar 13-Apr 19), and No Balloons Today (May 7-June 7).
